Change contracted power (Potencia)

In case you want to know if and how to change your contracted power, read this article.

Raising or lowering the contracted electrical power is an important step that you cannot take lightly. Inform yourself thoroughly before making a decision.

Choosing the right power for your home

When choosing a power that covers all our needs, we must take into account how many electrical appliances are usually operating at the same time in our home.

With the power calculator, we can give you free and easy advice so that you know how many kW you really need.

Easy and with totally personalised advice. This is Endesa's new solution.

How much does the contracted power cost?

On your bill, you can find a detailed breakdown of the cost of the power you currently have contracted.

If you look at your bill, you will see that it is organised around two main elements:

  • Energy consumption: this is variable, but you can control it. Each month will be different, and the more kWh you consume, the more this part of your bill will go up.
  • The contracted power: this is a fixed cost that depends on the contracted kWh. This cost will be repeated month after month. You choose whether you want to contract more or less kW (and consequently pay more or less).

How do you know if you need more or less power?

There are "home-made" ways to find out: if you never "blow the fuse", you probably have room to lower the power; if you blow it often, you are already at the limit. We recommend you use Endesa's power calculator for guidance.

In any case, changing the power of your electricity is not a decision you can take lightly.

  • Contracting more power than you need:
    Unnecessarily more expensive bills.
  • Contracting less power than you need:
Supply interruptions that would force you to increase the power again (additional cost).

How much does it cost to change electrical power?

The distribution company is the one that delivers the energy to your home. You cannot choose which one you want and you will be assigned one according to the area in which you live.

Until 31 May 2022, your distribution company allows you to make 2 free power changes, due to the adaptation to the new electricity tolls regulations.

After that date, or if you exceed the 2 power changes before that date, your distribution company will charge you approximately:

  • Around 11 euros for lowering the power, no matter how much you lower it. You will receive it in the bill after the change under the concept "hook-up fee".
  • Around 45 euros for each kW you increase the power. You will receive it in the bill after the change under the concept "extension and access rights".
  • Depending on your distributor, you may be charged for other procedures or deposits.
  • Remember that you can increase or decrease the power, in multiples of 0.1 kW.
In addition to these costs, you could also be charged for the  bulletin (50-200 euros).

Below, you can see which distributor corresponds to each territory:

Although there are nuances, especially in neighbouring areas, in general terms the electricity distribution companies are responsible for the following territories:

  • e-distribution: Catalonia, Aragon, Andalusia, Balearic Islands, Canaries and the province of Badajoz.
  • i-DE: Basque Country, Navarra, La Rioja, Castilla y León except for the province of Segovia and the west of the province of León, Madrid except for the south of the community, the province of Cáceres, the west of the province of Toledo, the north of the province of Guadalajara, Valencia and Murcia.
  • UFD: Galicia, west of the province of León, province of Segovia, south of the Community of Madrid, province of Ciudad Real, province of Cuenca, most of the province of Toledo and south of the province of Guadalajara.
  • E-REDES: Asturias.
  • Viesgo Distribution: Cantabria and some areas in the south and west of Asturias.

How much do you save by lowering your power?

The effect of reducing your power is immediate and constant on your bill, as it means lowering a fixed cost.

For an average household, this means saving around 5 euros per month and 60 euros per year for each power reduction.

How to change the contracted power

To do this you can contact your distributor and do it yourself or you can also contact us at Energy Nordic and ask us to do it for you.

Please note that this may take a few days depending on your energy meter situation.

Also bear in mind that by law the contracted power can only be changed once a year per household.
