The price of the electricity connection is made up of the extension, access and connection fees, but do they always have to be paid, and does the contracted power have an influence?
How much does it cost to switch on electricity?
The price of the electricity supply is regulated by the Government and, therefore, is the same for all autonomous communities and electricity distributors. This cost is divided into 3 concepts or fees.
The fees for registering electricity are as follows:
Price of the electricity connection
- Extension fee: €17.37 + VAT for the contracted power.
- Access fees: 19.70€ + VAT for each kilowatt (kW) contracted.
- Connection fees: €9.04 + VAT.
- Contracted electrical power
- Type of registration: new home or reactivation of supply?
- Reactivation registrations: when was the electricity disconnected?
The cost of the electricity supply contract refers to the fees for using the general electricity distribution network and is paid to the electricity distribution company, which manages, maintains and supervises the network.
The electricity distributor acts as an intermediary, as it is the one to whom we apply for registration. It forwards our request to the distributor, who carries out the procedure.
In all cases, the fees for the electricity connection are paid through the first electricity bill that arrives at the home. Once they have been collected, the distributor will transfer the amount of these fees to the corresponding distributor.
Price for new housing electricity supply
In newly built homes where there has never been an electricity supply, you have to pay the full amount for registering for electricity, that is, the three fees that make up the price for activating the electricity supply. This amount will depend exclusively on the power that you contract.
Until October 2018, it was necessary to choose between the standardised electricity power brackets. From this date onwards, the Government has introduced a modification that allows you to choose the power in 0.1 kW brackets. This makes it more in line with the needs of users.
In the following table, we can see a summary of the cost of registering electricity with the standardised power levels:
Calculation of the price of a new electricity supply in a new home
Power 4.2 kW
Extension fee: 17,37 €/kW * 4,2 kW = 72,95 €.
Access charges: 19.70 €/kW * 4.2 kW = 82.74 €.
Connection fee: 9.04 €.
Total = 164,73 €.
Total + VAT = 199,32 €.
How much does it cost to reconnect electricity?
Re-activating the electricity supply after the supply has been disconnected entails a change in the price of the electricity supply. In this case, it is not only the contracted power of the dwelling that is affected but also the length of time that the supply has been disconnected.
Extension rights are valid for 3 years. If the supply has been inactive for less than 3 years, you will not have to pay this concept again.
Calculation of the price for reactivating the electricity supply
Power 4.2 kW (supply decommissioned less than 3 years ago)
Extension fee: No fee to be paid
Access charges: 19.70 €/kW * 4.2 kW = 82.74 €.
Connection fee: 9,04 €.
Total = 91,78 €.
Total + VAT = 111,05 €.
Power 4.2 kW (supply disconnected more than 3 years ago)
Extension fee: 17,37 €/kW * 4,2 kW = 72,95 €.
Access charges: 19.70 €/kW * 4.2 kW = 82.74 €.
Connection fee: 9,04 €.
Total = 164,73 €.
Total + VAT = 199,32 €.
